What Is Telehealth?

Telemedicine or Telehealth, is a way for patients the ability to contact their healthcare providers remotely using their mobile device or desktop computer. Even before the COVID-19 epidemic, telehealth has and is growing rapidly as a convenient way to get medical care conveniently. With telehealth, patients can get non-emergency medical advice, diagnosis of their symptoms from a computer, tablet,  cell phone, or other device in the comfort of their homes.

With telehealth, healthcare providers can stay connected with their patients no matter where they are at any time. This eliminates having to travel to an office for non-emergency care during off hours, and patients can get the care and medicine they need fast if and when they are not able to leave their homes or do not have a medical office nearby. Telehealth also reduces spreading germs inside an office and reduces contact with others when you are sick.

Why Do We Need Telehealth?

Some patients are unable to visit a doctor’s office or hospital. If you’re located in a rural area or cannot leave your house for medical reasons, this is a way to conveniently get the care you healthcare you need.

What Is Telehealth Used For?

Telehealth gives patients with health concerns instant access to:

  • A provider who can who can prescribe medication after consulting with you at any time, day or night.
  • People who can help you understand the complex healthcare and health insurance systems.
  • A more cost-effective way to get medical care.
  • 24/7 access to care during holidays, weekends, and at nights when doctor’s offices are closed.

What Are Examples of Telehealth Services?

Examples of telehealth services include health history, medical consultations, treatment for acute and chronic conditions, referrals to specialists, medication refills, and virtual sick visits. Mental health services and counseling for depression, anxiety, and substance abuse are also possible using telehealth.

Does Telehealth Save You Money?

Telemedicine can reduce costs greatly. Since 2018, almost 60% of Americans said they had received a surprise bill for a medical expense not covered by insurance. The savings provided by telehealth services are valuable. Depending on your insurance plan, you could see large discounts on your medical bill and save going to a hospital emergency departments.

You can pay for Telehealth services out of pocket. Also, Medicare Part B provides coverage for various telemedicine services. There is a deductible applied once 20% of the Medicare-approved amount is paid. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) eased restrictions on telemedicine in 2020, which allows beneficiaries expanded access to telehealth services.
